Re: 12th Annual Great Lakes Challenge
Lou,
I don't believe Gary will be going this year. From what Bill tells me he has other plans for that weekend. Bill will be there.

Re: 12th Annual Great Lakes Challenge
Race Report from Mike Myers - Where is Raye??
Qualifying
The beautiful weather we’ve been experiencing continued, and got even
better if that’s possible. You couldn’t ask for better racing weather.
The nearest reported rain cloud was rumored to be somewhere in
Transylvania.
The plan for today is to run practice all morning, have a driver’s
meeting at noon, and then run the first two rounds of qualifying. The
race schedule got a bit longer than expected, when 140 racers signed up,
with others still on the way. Even with running 14 cars in the 1/10
scale Mains, and 12 cars in the 1/8 Mains, it’s going to be difficult if
not impossible to stay within the goal of only 16 Mains - and this is
with running all eleven (more coming??) 1/8 GT cars together.
Everything is running smooth as silk. Everyone is just doing the right
thing without needing to be told. Part of this is because everyone
already seems to know what to do, and part because of the *fun*
atmosphere at the event. Josh Cyrul’s wife has set up a food stand
alongside the track, so even that need is now taken care of. The PA
system is loud and clear, so no matter where you are, you’re informed of
what is going on - and in case you want to work indoors, you can tune
your FM radio to 89.7 and listen in your camper or trailer.
NEW IN THE PITS:
Dan Louis showed up with a new design for four-wheel-drive-braking for
1/8 on-road cars. These systems used to be illegal for this class, but
apparently the rule was removed from the ROAR rulebook. I’ve been told
the rule still remains in the IFMAR rules. Don came up with an
ingenious way to fit it to his 1/8 Shepherd car - it all fits together
as if it had been designed by the factory! Dan has been inventing new
parts for r/c race cars for 35 years now! This is just the latest in a
long line of things he has thought up and turned into reality.
Dan is running a Shepherd CEFX Version. He machined and fabricated all
the pieces. There are stainless steel rotors designed to "float" on
the front outdrives. Shepherd brake pads are used. There is a cable
from the throttle/brake servo, running to the self-adjusting brake
controls for the front brakes. The amount of front braking can be
varied, but there is a limit because of the front one-way bearings. Dan
says the front brakes are even more effective because of the weight
transfer during breaking - he can drive further into the corners before
having to apply the brakes.
RACING:
The driver’s meeting was held at noon, and everyone brought up their
cars for a group photo. Qualifying got underway soon afterwards.
Thanks to the "flagless start" developed by the Toledo club, even that
part of the event fit seamlessly into the general flow of the event.
There is a countdown starting at 30 seconds before the start of each
qualifier. Cars can come in for refueling whenever they want, and
spread themselves out around the track. At the tone, the clock is ready
to start, as soon as the first car crosses the line. The race clock
starts for each following car whenever they cross the line, so there are
no more first turn pile-ups. Something else that nobody misses is
frequency clips. Fewer than ten racers are running the old style
crystals - everyone else has switched to the new DSS style radios.
Chris Goetz took over the announcing duties as qualifying got underway.
He has a good way to make every race on the track sound like the World
Championships, and he’s constantly providing good information on what’s
going on.
Qualifying ran smoothly and efficiently. At the end of the first round,
the qualifying standings were printed - see below:
